Thanks for excellent insights. I've heard the idea of niching down many times from many successful people, but it's not always obvious how to do it, you sharing your experience is very valuable.
For me, as a software engineer (and for many others probably), niching down seems scary for a weird reason: the more you niche down, the further away you get from solving engineering problems and closer to solving actual business problems. Meaning, what made you a good employee isn't sufficient enough to run a successful consultancy. But that also means you move away from commoditized labor (i.e. freelancing) to becoming a sort of business consultant for them, which brings significantly more value.
